Canvas Wall Art Guide: What Size Art for Your Sofa, Bed and Dining Room

Turquoise ocean wave canvas wall art in a coastal living room

A large piece of canvas wall art finishes a room faster than almost anything else. One well-chosen print adds colour, gives the eye a focal point and makes a blank wall feel intentional. But how big should it be, how high do you hang it, and should you choose a frame? Here is a simple guide, in centimetres, for every room in the house.

The 2/3 rule: what size art above a sofa?

Interior designers use one easy rule: your art should be about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. For a standard three-seater sofa of around 210–220 cm, that means a canvas of roughly 140–150 cm wide. A panoramic size such as 150 x 75 cm fits perfectly. For a two-seater or a smaller lounge, 100 x 50 cm works well.

Too small is the most common mistake. When in doubt, go one size bigger: a large canvas looks calm and confident, while a small one floats on the wall.

Panoramic prints that suit a sofa: the Turquoise Ocean Wave Canvas, the Navy Beige Flowing Abstract Canvas and the Golden Light Burst Canvas.

How high should you hang wall art?

  • Above a sofa: leave 15–25 cm between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the canvas.
  • On an empty wall: hang the centre of the artwork at about 145–150 cm from the floor, which is roughly eye level.
  • Above a bed: leave 20–30 cm above the bedhead, so you don't bump it when you sit up.
  • Above a sideboard or console: 15–20 cm above the top, so the art and furniture read as one group.

Bedroom wall art

Above a queen bed (about 155 cm wide), a canvas of 100–150 cm wide looks balanced. Choose calm colours and soft subjects for a restful feel. Botanical and floral prints are a natural fit, like the White Peony Gold Leaf Canvas in a square size, or the White Blossom Golden Tree Canvas.

Dining room and hallway

In a dining room, art is seen while seated, so you can hang it slightly lower. A bold, colourful canvas starts conversations at the table: try the Orange Dress Piano Player Canvas or the Two Women Colourful Hats Canvas in a portrait size such as 70 x 100 cm.

In a hallway or entry, a portrait canvas of 50 x 70 cm or 60 x 90 cm makes a strong first impression without crowding a narrow space. The Rainy Day Umbrella Walk Canvas brings instant colour to a dark corridor.

Framed or unframed canvas?

  • Unframed (gallery canvas): a clean, modern look. The print wraps around the stretcher frame, so it is ready to hang straight away.
  • Black frame: adds contrast and definition, great in modern and industrial interiors.
  • Oak frame: warm and natural, ideal for Scandinavian, Japandi and coastal homes.
  • White frame: fresh and light, perfect for Hamptons-style and white walls.
  • Gold frame: a touch of luxury that brings out gold tones in the art.

Tip: match the frame to something already in the room, such as your timber floor, black tapware or brass lamp.

Choosing a style

Quick tips before you buy

  • Cut a sheet of paper or cardboard to the canvas size and tape it to the wall to test the size.
  • Repeat one colour from the art in a cushion, throw or vase to tie the room together.
  • Pair your art with warm lighting: a table lamp or wall light makes colours glow in the evening.

Frequently asked questions

What size canvas goes above a three-seater sofa?

Around 140–150 cm wide, or about two-thirds of the sofa width. A 150 x 75 cm panoramic canvas is a popular choice.

How high do you hang a canvas above a sofa?

Leave 15–25 cm between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the canvas.

Is a canvas print ready to hang?

Yes. Our canvas prints are stretched over a frame and arrive ready to hang, with or without an extra frame.

Should wall art match the sofa?

It doesn't need to match exactly. Repeat one or two colours from the room, and the art will feel connected.
